The numerous sources of information available practically everywhere today fully facilitates the notion that human beings are in a constant state of learning. Every form of stimuli, information, and data is carefully stored, comprehended where applicable, and then applied to the best of the person's ability, thus proving that learning is readily available everywhere. Numerous books, articles, and treatises have been written, defended, and then re-published as canon reference, with a lot of people garnering most of their stocked knowledge from these written materials. There are, however, those who maintain that this is actually a source of an underlying problem for many. Their contention is the tendency of many to take as factual and practical knowledge the things that they read in these reference materials and sources of information. What many learning advocates and members of the academe continue to stress is that regardless of the amount of information that people take in from the various sources, there is still no substitute for the proper learning procedure that involves instruction. This is because instruction has been specifically fine tuned to be a process that allows for better information absorption by the learner, in a procedure that was tailored to facilitate better and quicker understanding and later on proper association and application of what was learned. This is why despite all of the available self-teaching programs, there rally is still no substitute for an instruction-based mode of learning. This is also why rather than setting itself up as an alternative to the proper instruction-based method of learning, e learning has seen fit to follow the procedure of doing full instruction while facilitating the learning process, rather than just throwing everything that needs to be learned at the learner and allow them to fend for themselves in trying to process all the information that they were given.

The matter of proper instruction is something that developers of e learning solutions take special notice of, since learning management systems are only effective if they are specially tailored to allow for maximum learning, otherwise, it is just another system that provides information without proper guidance. This system of instruction is patterned after the widely accepted methods used in schools and learning centers, and is thereby structured with the proper sequence of learning in mind, allowing learners to quickly grasp the concept or lesson being taught, retain it better, and then later implement it as a useful skill or as knowledge for practical use. This is exactly why rather than just plain text, e learning systems come with other media content, such as video and audio components, to better engage more sensory perceptions, to facilitate better learning, as well as minimize the chances that the learner will lose interest in the lesson, which is usually the case when all that is being done is reading plain text, and then answering exercise question later. Developments in various media, such as 3D animation, mini-movies, and animated audio-visual presentations are all effective tools employed by e learning to not only deliver a wider experience and range of sensory input to the learner, but also minimize or altogether eliminate disinterest in most learners today, even in the younger age groups, which are notorious for having quite short attention spans, another quality attributed to the online environment of today.
