Most of us love trivia. Not only because it gives
us a chance to see how much we have been able
to retain and lets us show off our smarts, it's just
plain fun.
The other day, a friend and I were talked about
about nostalgia. He asked me a very pointed
question, "Do you think we're getting old because
we like it so much?"
Isn't that a great question?
I had to hesitate for a moment. It was such a great
(and loaded) question, it deserved a few minutes of
introspection. I concluded, however, that no, it's not
a matter of getting older.
It's a matter of reliving youthful good times when all
of our hopes and dreams were stlll ahead of us.
Nostalgia, when you break it down, is really no more
than thinking about what happened around us when we
were young. It was a time when most of us were not
concerned with things likes bills, kids to raise, jobs, taxes
and all that grown-up stuff.
It was a time for playing the music of our day, watching
the tv shows of our time, going to the movies that came
out that may or may not have expressed how we felt.
It was a time that most double-entredres were completely
lost on us. Best friends. Hanging out with our pals.
Talking on the phone and complaining because we were
asked to keep our room clean, or at least less sloppy.
It was a time when we finally swung the strings of our
graduation caps from one side to another to show we
reached yet another milestone. When we started to see
our friends get engaged and then married.
Nostalgia is many things to many people, but it can
brighten the most dismal of days and put a smile on your
lips faster than the speed of light. Some of our best
conversations start with "Remember when...?"
For most of us I'd say nostalgia is just a few feel-good
moments about a bunch of feel-good times.
