Not Dubbed into Spanish?... +Wha?...

We wandering Americans (in Spain at this time) have been
seeking our American movies in their original language.
Americans do not dub "Almodovar." We use sub-titles. We
appreciate Spanish artistry and honor Spanish culture. Why
must our cinema art form be debased and degraded by dubbing
into Spanish!
But where, or where, do we find that cultural connection we
so desperately need to save us from the robotic mediocrity
of life devoid of culture?
*Cinemaclub 7 Arte* to the rescue! May 17, 2003, we
discovered on Valencia Life's website a new cinema playing
our American movies without Spanish dubbing. We purchased
tickets through their new ticketing outlet, paying by credit
card over the Internet! ( http://www.ValenciaLife.net ) -
click on their new service - "Ticket Outlet." Karla Darocas
has been doing a terrific job getting this welcomed resource
up and running. What a great service!
The only caveat was our directions, which caused us to lose
about 45 minutes in Torrevieja. Having been to Torrevieja
before, we were sure we would find the cinema. We found a
street with both a Farmacia and a nearby Caja Murcia. We
didn't know Torrevieja is both a city and region. We kept
asking for the *Pilar de la Horadada Cinema*. Finally an
understanding shopkeeper told us to head south. Then we
drove about 15 km south to Torre de la Horadada. Hmmm...not
there...a nice Brit drinking in an outdoor caf+ directed us
one more town south...Pilar de la Horadada.
We arrived 10 minutes late, and after describing our
odyssey, management gave us drinks and said
we could see the next viewing later that evening.
We are the worst case scenario...we speak very little
Spanish...believe directions...but always
leave early just in case. The directions received should
have read something like...
*****
Drive about 15 km south of Torrevieja on the N332 to the
round-about and turn right to Pilar de la Horadada.
Drive to about the center of town. You will see one of
those large vertical directional signposts with 6 large
signs (culture center, police station, etc.). There will
be a Farmacia (green cross) on the right, on the corner
of Calle Canalejas (a one-way street the wrong way).
Next street will be one-way the right way. There is a
Caja Murcia bank on the right. Find a parking place and
ask for Calle Canalejas. The Cinema "Duplex I" is about
half a block to the north on the right hand side of that
street. Look for movie posters covering the windows.

*Driving Tip: Earlier this year, we got ripped off badly by
the tolls on the A-37, 2,60 euro was not too bad...driving
from Alicante. But the very next exit nicked us for another
2,60 euros! Take exit on the A-37 to Guardamar (no toll and
it is a far superior road than the next exit to Torrevieja).
This theatre is blessed with an excellent screen, holds
about 600 movie-goers in very comfortable seats, and
broadcasts state of the art sound. It is family run...with
children, husband, wife, and parents (grandparents) handling
everything from the gate, working the concessions (bar) and
picking up after their littering patrons. We saw "Chicago."
We luxuriated in the experience...just as rewarding as many
cinemas encountered in the US! The management's wonderful
"personal touch" was a greatly appreciated amenity in this
ambient environment!
Forgetting about the hassle getting there and basking in the
heightened afterglow of the movie, we wandered a few blocks
away and dined in the Restaurante Chino Zhong Hua (C/. Mayor
77). The cuisine was excellent and totally topped off our
evening. The long drive back to Alicante seemed as a moment.
We'll be back! Or as a dubbed A. Schwartzenegger might say,
"fYo retorno!"
