It doesn't take a rocket scientist for those of us in America to
decide what's best for this country on November 7th. All it
takes is some common sense.
Common sense Question #1
Do we take a tax cut or pay down the three trillion dollars worth
of debt? The only way we personally get out of debt is by biting
the bullet and paying off our credit cards. The same has to
happen in our government.
If Americans pay off their debt, the interest saved will more
than make up for any measly tax cuts we are promised after
November 7th. Social Security benefits could be extended for
another 50 to 100 years just on the savings. Don't believe, just
do the math.
Common sense Question #2
If you are raising a family and every dollar you earn is already
being spent and it's still not enough, do you
honestly believe you will set aside money for your retirement?
Sounds like a great plan to make everybody personally responsible
for themselves but how practical is this? It wasn't practical in
1937 and it still isn't today. Life has a way of throwing
unexpected events in our path and if the money is available,
we'll use it. So the decision must be made, do you want your
money now or when you are really going to need it?
Common sense Question #3
Make the energy companies richer or find alternative energy
sources? Quite frankly this should be a no brainer. We need to
cut consumption and find ways to stop polluting the earth. Our
grandchildren's future and their children's future depends on
what we decide now. In just 100 years, we have done more damage
to our environment than any of the preceding generations. A
frightening thought isn't it?
Common sense Question #4
Do we break what isn't broken? Public schools are not broken.
Do they need improving? Yes, but privatization or a voucher
system is only a short term fix. For the long haul, we need to
make sure every child reads by Grade 3 and this can easily be
done with the system we now have. In fact, the public school
system has already gotten back to the basics of education.
We just need to see that teachers are given raises based on
merit, classes remain small and we use computers to bring
up the reading level.
Common sense Question #5
Are we a country -- by, and for the people? This means do we
stand up for what's right, not what's expedient? It would be
expedient to only think of ourselves and our pocketbooks on
November 7th. But this short sited view will do immeasurable
harm to future generations. We can no longer afford to be
concerned just with ourselves so when you cast your vote,
consider all the issues. After all it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out Americans need to make some hard choices
no matter who is running for President.
