Marketing a business to unseen customers can sound like a daunting task, but with a little planning and some legwork, it is possible to attract customers to your site without spending a lot of money. In order to run a profitable online business, you must first think about what audience you are trying to reach with your products. After determining your audience, think about what other sites this audience might be looking at, and how you can reach out to them using marketing tools.
Determining your audience is key to making sure that your marketing strategies are reaching the people for whom your product is intended. For instance, someone running a shop on ebay that sells trendy clothing and accessories might have an audience of high school girls and college women.Or, maybe your site sells car parts – your audience may be a little harder to define, but let’s say that it would probably attract more men than women, and that they would be within the age group of 18-35.
Next, as a business owner you need to put yourself in your clients’ shoes. Think about what other sites your clients might be visiting, even if they have absolutely nothing to do with the type of product you sell.Let’s go back to the example of the ebay shop owner with the trendy clothing store. Teenage girls and women in their early twenties are probably also looking at beauty products, home décor products, pop music, and probably even textbooks. These are four very different areas that would be possible targets for marketing for your website. The audience for the car part shop might be interested also in men’s clothing and accessories, guy-focused e-zines, and sports. This might seem like stereotyping, and it’s true that you will not reach an entire target audience by marketing to websites that seem that they would be of similar interest – but you will definitely reach a large enough audience.
Finally, decide if you want to market using well designed ads that link to your site, or even by using fun stuff like discount coupons or announcements for sales. Also, don’t forget about your off-line audience as well. Handing out business cards and fliers at the appropriate venues will allow for even more online opportunities.
