When drawing up a home security plan that you consider fit for your family and the place in Connecticut where you live, you probably focused most of your energy on prohibiting the entrance of intruders. Certainly, your energy was well spent. However, there's no reason to forget the dangers we pose to ourselves on a daily basis. In the case of fires, people living in the home are the biggest culprits. Accidental fires can be sparked in so many different ways that it will frighten the average homeowner. Before you consider your home security plan complete, ask yourself these five questions.

1. Is your family a "dine out or heat up" group? That is, does your family spend little time crafting big meals in the kitchen? For some families, with everyone working or busy with their lives, there just isn't enough time to labor over time-consuming cooking and cleaning in the kitchen. In this case, a simple smoke detector should suffice. However, if cooking is a part of the daily routine, make sure you have a fire extinguisher available and your smoke alarm set up to activate your home alarm. When multiple pots are boiling and the oven's churning, fire hazards are everywhere.

2. Are there smoke detectors in every part of the house? It may seem excessive, but there are countless ways for a fire to break out. In a corner bedroom? The candles could do the trick. By the basement or attic? A space heater could break out with little encouragement. Don't assume things; install the alarms and erase the doubt.

3. Have we given our power stations the benefit of the doubt? Electrical fires can be the most difficult to handle. While most modern outlets can handle a high amount of power, some older apartments and houses have questionable wiring. You should have an electrician look it over for you. In the meantime, don't overload power strips and extension cords, especially when using space heaters.

4. Does the family have a clear idea of the easiest fire exits? Once you smoke detector starts and your home alarm system is ringing, everyone needs to think fast and act quicker. Therefore, the plan for exiting the house should be like second nature for the whole family. Set up a good escape route and run some fire drills. Make it fun for everyone so it sticks in their minds.

5. Are we playing with fire? There are few things as attractive as a wood-burning fireplace churning throughout the holiday months. But in a sense, you are starting a fire in your home. Tread carefully around the use of a fireplace or candles. Also, keep the clutter to a minimum at home. If a fire breaks out and the exits are blocked, you'll be in for added trouble. Don't let poor housekeeping thwart your home security effort.
