Starting a family can be tough going for many people. The costs involved in bringing up children can mean endless hours of overtime and countless missed opportunities to enjoy the formative years of a young person growing up.
Unfortunately, that's life. For a child to grow up and have everything they could ever want or need normally requires some sacrifices along the way and as long as quality time is spent with them along the way, it shouldn't have too many negative consequences in the years ahead.
For grandparents however, it's a different story altogether. They've been there before and more than likely have the t-shirt to prove it. Furthermore, their years of experience and learned patience will prove invaluable as the child grows up and for many kids the bond they'll form with their grandparents will be a very special one.
Importantly, many grandparents will be able to dedicate far more time to the upbringing of the children than the parents due either to retirement or semi-retirement, and many grandparents will be keen to make up for time lost with their own children.
However exciting it may be to have a brand new generation arriving imminently in the family, it is important to remember that a grandparent's role isn't the same as being a parent. It may be tempting to pass on tips and advice on how to be a good parent, but it's probably best only to do so when asked as the new parents may otherwise feel that they are being undermined or judged.
Furthermore, the grandparents may have far more disposable cash if they've worked their whole life and paid off their mortgage so it may be tempting to spoil the grandkids with treats and expensive gifts. Again however, this may only serve to undermine all the hard work the parents are putting in to bring their children up.
So there are a lot of things to consider when becoming a grandparent. Ultimately though, just being there as an extra avenue of support when needed is the key to succeeding in the role.
But there will probably be a range of emotions experienced. As we get older, we become increasingly aware that time is short and we need to make the most of our lives. Most people will also start to consider their legacy and what they have to leave behind for their loved ones.
For many, ensuring adequate
life cover is in place is as good a starting point as any, as a comprehensive life insurance policy will guarantee a set amount of money to those we leave behind. And making sure a will is written - outlining exactly who in the family is to receive what - is also paramount.
And once these basics are in place, all that's left for a new grandparent to do is to sit back, relax and enjoy their golden years with the whole family around them.
