Moving into a new house or apartment can be a disconcerting experience, for many reasons. And it's not helped by the fact that most new houses come without window blinds. As well as bare windows looking ugly, a lack of blinds is not energy efficient and, worst of all, allows anyone in the street who is walking past your window to see directly into your house.
That's where temporary window blinds come in. Innovative companies have introduced low cost, temporary blinds into the markets in both the UK and US. Made of paper, they are made in a couple of standard sizes and are distributed in a cardboard box.
Installation is easy. Once they arrive, you simply measure your window frame, and cut away any of the blind that isn't needed. Then, all you need to do is pull the backing off the adhesive tape that is attached to the blinds, and stick the blinds to the window frame. Once installed, raising and lowering the blinds is simple - two small clips are provided, and the paper is folded to the correct height, and the clips attached.
Temporary blinds are easily bought online (many of the major online retailers stock them) and they are also easy to pick up from DIY stores and superstores near you (for those emergency blind situations that crop up). They can be bought either as single blinds, or in a box, which comes in handy for times when you just have one window to cover, as well as times when you have a whole house or apartment to cover with blinds.
As this is a new market, and the emphasis is on practicality, there aren't a lot of different types of temporary blind available at the moment. Most manufacturers sell the one style, with the more adventurous offering them in either white or black. The market is likely to develop over time, though, so it's very likely that new models will be available soon.
The best thing about temporary window shades is their ridiculously low cost. A single blind shouldn't cost more than six or seven dollars, while a box of six is usually priced at around the $50 mark. At this price, there really is no excuse for not installing blinds on each and every window of your new house, even if you only need temporary blinds for a few weeks until your fashionable new mini blinds arrive and you are able to install them instead.
