Do You Meet People Online?

You cannot fail to have heard about websites such as MySpace, Twitter and Facebook in recent years. They have become the perfect way to get to know other people with similar interests to you - and most people have at least one social networking account.

You need to be a bit careful in certain respects; websites like this are wonderful and they certainly serve a purpose, but you also need to think about your safety.

For example, if you made a connection with someone online for the first time, you wouldn't necessarily pick up the phone and call them on that same day. Even if you really hit it off it can be safer to keep your conversations on an online basis to begin with.

Talking to someone on the phone can be awkward at the best of times if you don't know them very well. So just imagine chatting with someone whom you barely know! That's why reading each other's profiles and sending messages through a social networking site first is such a good way to get started.

Over time you will start to get to know each other a bit better. If you want to extend the friendship at this stage you can then use instant messaging online to have a real time conversation. You might also consider swapping e-mail addresses once you become more comfortable with each other.

While some people might rush into picking up the phone, you will find it much easier to do so when you have already established the friendship online. By this time you will already know something about each other. That means it will be much easier to keep up a conversation and to find plenty to talk about.

Of course, when you start talking online you may find that you don't even live in the same country. That is no reason not to start up a friendship though. Since it is very cheap nowadays to call virtually anywhere in the world, it isn't a barrier to stop you from speaking to each other.

What you need to remember is that regular contact via phone calls with someone who has become a good friend in another country can be just one way that you keep in touch. Cheap calls to Cuba for example mean that you could easily chat with someone living there without having to keep one eye on how long the call is going on for! There's no need to worry about that when you don't have to pay much for the service.

So think of social networking online as the first step in making new friendships - but take things one step at a time as well.
