There's no doubt that the disease known as Alzheimer's is a hot topic amongst medical researchers. The search for an effective treatment takes many twists and turns.

Whilst I don't consider myself that old yet, I'm aware of what's looming for me in my old age. Age related conditions and diseases could be a worry, even more so depending where you live and how good your local medical services are.

Many of us have the perception that Alzheimer's is something you develop when you are in your retirement years. So, I was shocked to see a TV report that showcased a young man of 39 who was in the early stage of the disease.

By the way, I'm a great believer in natural remedies and in taking preventative action, like taking a daily supplement. So, eager to find out more I chanced upon a study carried out in India, by the Indian Academy of Neurology no less.

This is where the reference to turmeric is introduced as the study concentrated on one of its prime components or extracts, called curcumin.

The herb itself has been used in India for centuries as an ingredient in curry powder, and in passing, helping to treat a whole host of other conditions. Here it looked at how it affected people who already had Alzheimer's and intriguingly found it did improve the patients cognitive functions.

We know that curcumin is a potent antioxidant and it has good anti inflammatory qualities, so this is a big plus point.

I often get lost in the midst of all that medical terminology and it takes patience to sift through the data to find those nuggets of information we can relate to. Sure, other factors come into play and human pathology is a complex thing.

Forgiving the cliche, but our future is in our hands and if you could possibly reduce the risks of developing such a condition by taking a turmeric supplement then the decision is an easy one to make.
