In Microsoft Outlook, when you attempt to open any file you may fail to do it and might encounter the following error message:
"An unexpected error prevented access to this file. Use ScanDisk to check the disk for errors, and then try using the Inbox Repair Tool again"
In this case, you can open your Outlook account, without any problem. You may see all of your emails, notes, contacts and other data there, but you can not open any file.
In such circumstances, as stated in the error message, you are recommended to use ScanDisk utility. It is a disk checking utility comes inbuilt with your Windows systems.
When the disk checking gets completed, you need to use Inbox Repair Tool or ScanPST.exe to work around the PST errors.
ScanPST.exe is an inbuilt tool of Microsoft Outlook which is able to fix the PST corruption and other minor problems. After completing the process of ScanPST.exe, try to open the files again.
Note: Inbox Repair generally repairs some of the issues with Microsoft Outlook, but it can not guarantee you the complete solution of your problem. The error message mentioned below is very hard to manage using ScanPST.exe as it occurs due to severe fragmentation in hard drive and harsh PST corruption.
