Kids go wild over chocolate fondue. Or just about any type of fondue - honey, caramel, marshmallow, etc. But ever stop to think about where this amazing dish came from? Not really, admit it.

What is a fondue? Where did it come from? What are the different types of fondue?

Here's how the story goes. The fondue is a traditional dish in Switzerland, a communal dish shared by the family huddled around the dinner table. Traditional Swiss cheese is melted into a sauce in an earthenware pot placed over a small burner. Diners use dipping forks to dip bits of food into the warm sauce.

The fondue was created out of necessity. Since bread freezes in the winter, the early Swiss tried by dipping the bread into melted cheese to soften it up. And it worked. Fondues since became a traditional Swiss favorite.

Fondue pot recipes are now as popular as the fondues themselves, thanks to whoever transformed the fondue from being a hearty meal to a delicious dessert.

Some examples of fondue pot recipes are Chocolate Fondue a la Chalet Suisse, Chocolate Fondue from Stonehurst Manor, Creamy Beef Fondue, Creamy Veggie Fondue, Classic Swiss Fondue Recipe, Swiss Tomato Fondue Recipe, Appenzeller, and Neuchateloise.
