The psychological harm acne or Zits causes it's many sufferers should not be underestimated; but there are now many treatments available which can help the condition so it is more bearable. It is one of those areas where research has continued to make advancements; the result of this effort is new, more effective, treatments are becoming available. Despite the number of acne skin care products currently available on the market, they are broadly categorized into three distinctly separate groups:
- Drugstore or Internet: Preventative medication
- Those available at a drugstore or over-the-counter
- Prescription only: Requires visit to doctor
Those that fall into the preventative category are based around general skin conditioning. For example, toners and skin cleansers that have been formulated to help prevent acne. In the real sense, these products are just those that should be part of your daily routine.
There are acne skin care products that are more specialized in there approach and are formulated to reduce and limit the amount of oil in the pores of our skin. Excess oil needs to be stopped from clogging the pores as this oil make it easier for bacteria to grow, exacerbating the condition.
Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin and are easily obtainable in any drug store. They work by reducing oil plus other contaminants from the skin and in the pores; this can reduce harmful bacteria and stop their chance of growth.
Many other acne skin care products have become available over the counter and on the internet; they don't usually require a prescription. These include products like vanishing creams which extract the excess oil from the skin. Most of these are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne).
Although benzoyl peroxide works well, it is possible you may have a reaction, it is suggested that any benzoyl peroxide skin care product should not contain the active ingredient at more than 5.5 percent. It is not always possible to find an acne skin care product that works first time. You may need to try a few but if none of them seem to be working then you would be advised to contact your skin specialist.
If you do need to see your doctor or skin care specialist then he may give you a prescription for antibiotics or special ointments. In more serious cases your skin care specialist may decide that a small surgical procedure can be used to remove the oil and infection from your pores. You are warned never to attempt this yourself as it could lead to serious skin problems.
Your doctor could prescribe a hormone-based treatment to treat your skin problem. Hormonal changes are known to cause acne and such skin care treatments are sometimes known to be effective. There is no longer any reason to despair if you have this skin complaint or are prone to its effects. Science has produced many effective treatments for this unkind condition.
