Taiwanese multinational electronics corporation Acer Incorporated has unveiled their next line of mobile phones in this year's Mobile World Congress. The computer and mobile phone manufacturer seems to support both the Google Android operating system as well as the Windows Mobile platform. Among the Windows Mobile platform are the Acer neoTouch P400 and P300. On the Google Android side, there is the Acer Liquid e, the beTouch E400 and the Acer beTouch E110.
Examining the Hardware
Running on the Google Android 1.5 (also called the "Cupcake") operating system, the beTouch E110 seems to be an entry level budget phone. The good news is that it does run efficiently on average specs. It has a ST Ericsson PNX6715 416 MHz processor with both GSM 2G and HSDPA 3G capabilities as well as EDGE. The mobile phone has no WLAN and Infrared support but it does have support for Bluetooth connectivity (v2.0 with A2DP).
The vanilla version of the smart phone is equipped with a 256 MB RAM and a 256 MB ROM internal memory. It has a micro SD card slot along with a standard FM radio and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The beTouch E110 does have a decent 3.15 megapixel camera that is capable of capturing 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution images. The camera has video support but is lacking Auto Focus. Actually the camera has no other special features but at 3.15 megapixels, it is enough for taking decent snapshots.
Multimedia is played on the E110's Nemo player. The smart phone is capable of playing audio files with the MP3, WAV, WMA, eAAC+ formats and videos with the MP4, WMV, H.264, H.263 formats.
A Look at the E110's Touch Screen
Acer's E110 is built with a clear 2.8 inch (71 mm) touch screen. To be more specific, it is built in with a TFT resistive touch screen that is able to display up to 256K colors using a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. Considering that it will mostly be used for internet browsing, the screen does a good enough job. Because the screen is resistive, it is a given that there is no multi touch support. But if preferred, using a stylus is an option, much like in older model smart phones.
There is a useful 5-way navigation key for application shortcuts. The virtual keyboard also has the usual predictive text input function and three preset keyboard settings to choose from. Users can opt to use a compact version of the virtual keyboard or retain the full set of QWERTY keys.
Approachable Design
The E110 weighs a comfortable 105 g with a 13.4 mm thickness, 103.5 mm height and 54 mm width for a comfortable grip for either ends of its target market. The phone also has two available colors to choose from: Black or Dark Blue.
The design of the Acer beTouch E110 does indeed reflect a reliable entry level phone. With curved edges and a simplistic design, it looks very approachable for those who are either older and are easily intimidated by complicated technology or for younger audiences who are looking for an entry level smart phone.
