The next time you look at any mold, think about how many things we use every day that has been made with one and you'll probably agree that it truly is a useful tool - maybe even one we couldn't live without.

Indeed, one of the most versatile tools we use today is a mold - of course not the kind that grows in damp, warm enclosed spaces - but the kind that is used in many industries, homes and movie studios. Molds can be made to use once only, or made to use over and over again. Permanent molds are designed to create uniformly made items, while many one-use molds are for artistic and creative purposes.

Permanent molds are used extensively in many industries. An endless variety of injection molds are filled with plastics to create whole toys and pieces for other toys. Little plastic army men are good examples of injection molded whole plastic toys. Auto makers use many injection molded plastic parts in finishing the interior of a car. It's also easy to overlook a lot of the smaller everyday items made with injection molding; items such as plastic bottle caps or DVD cases are done this way.

Molds for rubber masks and facial pieces were once used by special effects creators for films long before these effects were done by computer. These types of molds represent some of those used for entertainment purposes and differ greatly from injection molding. A colored rubber epoxy mix would be spread over a plaster cast or carved form and allowed to dry. Then, these pieces would be used to create character features like a large nose or bald head. These pieces of molded rubber are still used in many independent films and studio movies today, but the trend now is toward computerized special effects.

At home, pan molds are used for cold congealed salads and for baking too. A holiday family meal seems more festive with a molded salad surrounded by appetizers. Technically, all cake pans are molds whether they are square, round or something else because the finished 'form' of a cake comes out after baking. Craft projects are made easier using preformed molds to produce plaster figurines for decorating and selling at craft fairs.

Most cast molding is normally done in a foundry using molten metals. Many newer cars have an aluminum block motor done in foundry using cast molding. On a much smaller scale, a reputable full service jeweler may also use a cast mold as needed for precious metal rings and other jewelry findings.
