The Chevrolet Camaro first came into being in the North America in 1966. General Motors, Chevrolet's parent company, felt the need to develop a car to provide much needed competition to the market crushing Ford Mustang. The 1967 Camaro used a chassis and lots of large components with the Pontiac Firebird (one more General Motors company), and so the time required and money needed to produce the car were massively reduced.

Often called an a muscle car, or 'Pony' vehicle, a word that referred to compact vehicles that were within reach financially and had a sports feel about their styling (a trend started by the Ford Mustang in 1964), the Camaro lined up next to an ever growing number of cars that were struggling for an ever ballooning market. American buyers loved the engine, the styling and the price of such cars and the multiplying sales guaranteed that lots of vehicle producers put out their own variations out as rapidly as possible.

The 1970's and 80's were the car's best days, when the car was sought after by millions of buyers, not only in North America but across the world. The mix of sports styling, performance and numerous TV shows using pony cars added to a huge market, and the desire for many to own a Camaro never disappeared.

Five distinct generations of the car have been sold. Generations one to four were developed between 1966 and 2002 (when development of the Camaro and Firebird both ceased), and production of the fifth generation Camaro began once more in 2009 and against strong opposition to such polluting muscle vehicles from environmental campaigners, the car has proved itself to once again be a big success with the North American public.

The car was at times available in a hardtop coupe and a soft top convertible, the convertible was extremely popular among buyers from sea bordering states who loved the thought of cruising the beach boulevards with the top down, the sounds up and the shades on.

The Camaro has a massive following with many buyers owing every variation of the Camaro at one time or another and others holding on to original 1960's versions and keeping them in pristine condition.

The Camaro was always a favourite car for modification during the cars lifetime, with owners spending time and lots of cash adding high performance parts to improve their Camaro's looks and performance. The car's have been very successful in racing winning many Trans-Am series titles and lots other races and titles through its years. Plenty of racers still use old generation Camaro's even now and are still very successful, often winning when against much more modern vehicles.

The Camaro lives on today, and with its history, performance and great looks from the fifth model, the car is bound to be with us for a long time to come.
