The key to success in network marketing, as in any home business, is to create sales.
But the magic of multi-level marketing begins when you can recruit new associates into your downline, and thus dramatically increase the sales volume of your organization.
For many of us the idea of recruiting becomes a huge obstacle to our success. So much so, in fact, that it is the leading cause of failure in network marketing and drives more people out of the business than any other single factor.
And rightly so, as recruiting is not easy.
Early on in my MLM career I decided mastering the art of building a downline was crucial to the successful realization of my income goals. There was no way around it. To make money in the business I needed to find people willing to join my team.
Here are 5 tips I have learned along the way:
Establish Credibility
It's said that a prophet is never known in his own village. In my experience the same applies to the multi-level marketing business, and this will become apparent as you approach the people on your warm list with the opportunity.
To overcome this, I advise my new members to focus on selling products to their warm list, rather than trying to recruit them into the business. If they enjoy using your products and become regular customers, you will make a monthly commission check off of those sells.
Eventually, as you begin to realize success in your business, your warm market will be asking you for information on how to join.
Look Beyond Your Warm List
So, if I'm advising you to avoid asking your warm list to join your team, the question arises: How do I get new team members?
Quite simply, in order to achieve true growth in your direct marketing business you will eventually need to build relationships with people outside your immediate sphere of influence.
You can do this by participating in various forums and message groups online, using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, and perhaps even creating videos for YouTube.
Other traditional methods involve being active in your community, and by simply getting out and meeting new people.
Use Every Tool In Your Toolbox
Don't limit your marketing efforts to one method.
A common, and frequently overused, method of marketing is to hand out business cards. This is a powerful tool, but it should only play a small role in your overall marketing efforts. To achieve success you must engage every tool available to you.
Many of today's progressive MLM opportunities allow online marketing to build teams. If so, are you using free blogs or free classified ads to build your prospect list?
You may also want to model your marketing efforts after the most successful people in your business. Find out what they are doing and copy their success.
Be Consistent and Persistent
This does not mean to pester the same prospects over and over. Being consistent and persistent pertains to your ability to drive on with your recruiting efforts, despite rejection and failure.
It's almost cliché, but anybody who has ever achieved success in network marketing faced the same obstacles you may be facing today. There's nothing new here, and you're not alone. What is unique, and sadly rare, among successful marketers, is their uncanny ability to press on against all the negativity and rejection.
Play The Numbers
Sales professionals know the numbers relevant to their business very well. They know how many prospects will make an order, and they how many cold-calls they will need to make to get one interview.
For example, in my experience I need to meet 18 people on average to get one person to suggest they may be interested in the opportunity. I can then estimate that I will need to bring five people to an opportunity meeting to get one person to join my team. And finally, for every three people who join my team, two will quit within the month, or not make any effort to build their business.
By playing the numbers I can accurately forecast that I need to meet 90 people to find one solid new team member.
Where Do We Go From Here?
Building your downline does not have to be painful. Focus on your goals, and never allow rejection to get you down. Success in this business is truly a numbers game, so play the numbers and make money.
