When most people think of hypnosis, they think of what they see on TV shows or movies. This is a hypnotist putting someone into a trance and making them look stupid. However, you need to realize that there are hundreds of different hypnosis techniques out there. Here are five different techniques you can practice.

1. Traditional hypnosis
With this type of hypnosis, direct suggestions are made to the unconscious mind. This type of hypnosis works extremely well for someone who accepts what they are told without a lot of questions. While this is what you would normally see on TV or in movies, it really has little effect on people who are critical or skeptical with their thinking processes.

2. Ericksonian hypnosis
This is one of the more effective hypnosis techniques on people today. The reason for this is because today's generation is taught to question everything. This method is better at reaching and influencing the unconscious no matter how skeptical people are. Unfortunately, this method takes years of training and studying to perfect it.

3. Isomorphic metaphors
This technique offers direction to the unconscious through telling a story that offers a moral. The unconscious mind then takes pieces from the story and relates it to elements of a specific problem, situation or behavior. It can be effective in getting someone to realize a specific action is not right.

4. Embedded command
This hypnosis technique works by distracting the conscious mind. The hypnotist tells the subject an interesting story that will distract the conscious mind and engage their brain on the story. Within the story, you will find hidden indirect suggestions that are typically accepted by the unconscious. This allows the subject to take in what you are saying with even realizing it.

5. Process instructions
This technique focuses more on the unconscious than the conscious. What it does is direct the unconscious to find a memory of an appropriate learning experience from the past. From there, the unconscious can apply that experience to make a change in the present. It can be extremely effective and allows the subject to change in the present and future.

There are a plethora of different hypnosis techniques you can apply to others or have put on you. Each method has its positives and negatives, which makes it all the more important you take the time to research and determine what you think would be most effective on you. Just know that there is much more to hypnosis than what you see on TV.
